President Moon Jae-in in a March 3 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed his "heartfelt condolences" to those who made sacrifices due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and their bereaved families.
The Korean leader also paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of President Zelensky and his people to "resolutely fight" such aggression.
Cheong Wa Dae Spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said in a written briefing on the 30-minute talk that began at 5:35 p.m. that President Moon described the call was made in "an extremely unfortunate situation."
The leaders last talked on the phone on April 10, 2020.
President Moon said, "As a country that suffered a tragic war, Korea expresses its respect to President Zelensky for his strong leadership. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who have risen resolutely to defend their country," adding that he prayed for the restoration of peace and stability in Ukraine as soon as possible, something Seoul will work together toward.
President Zelensky explained the situation in his war-torn country and asked for Korea's "available support" to overcome the crisis and defend Ukraine.
President Moon said Korea backs the preservation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territory and supports peaceful efforts through talks.
On Korea's pledge of USD 10 million in humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian people and refugees, he added that he expects the prompt aid "to be of substantial help."
President Moon said he believed that the Ukrainian people's unity and sacrifice will help the nation overcome this crisis, and encouraged them to have courage and not forget that Korea and the world are with Ukraine.
Ukraine will surely overcome such adversity, he added, and the Korean people send their firm support and solidarity.
President Zelensky responded by thanking President Moon for his message of encouragement, saying his words will provide a big lift to the Ukrainian people.
