Korea has been elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for the sixth straight time.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 14 said the nation was reelected on June 10 for the 2023-25 term at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

With 54 member states, ECOSOC is a core organization for leading U.N. discussions on economy and society such as implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and support for a peaceful and inclusive society. Every year, 18 members are elected to each serve a three-year term.

Since 2008, Korea has served on the council sixth straight times and 10 times overall. From the Asia-Pacific region, Korea, China, Qatar and Laos were elected to ECOSCO this year.

The ministry said Korea's reelection reflects the world's "good evaluations and high expectations" of the nation's leading role and contribution to the implementation of humanity's joint sustainable development.

"As an ECOSOC member state, we will accelerate the implementation of sustainable development goals, a joint goal of the international community, and lead U.N. discussions on economy, society and health, thus raising a notch Korea's standing as a global pivot country in contributing to international peace and prosperity," it added.

Seoul seeks simultaneous membership in the U.N.'s three main councils: ECOSOC, Security Council and Human Rights Council.
