The government think tank Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) has agreed with an Italian program to recognize each country's footprint verification system.

This comes in response to more stringent confirmation of such systems when exporting and importing goods, especially in the European Union

Carbon footprint refers to the greenhouse gas emissions generated from the production process of goods or services, ranging from raw material collection, manufacturing, distribution and use to disposal and conversion into carbon dioxide.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on July 18 said KITC's Korea National Cleaner Production Center and Carbon Footprint Italy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on bilateral recognition of verification systems for carbon footprints.

Under the MOU, both sides will pursue the conclusion of a mutual recognition agreement on such systems.

After the accord is signed, the carbon footprints obtained in Korea by Korean companies are expected to be used in Europe as well.

A ministry source said, "Based on the conclusion of this MOU, our plan is to bolster bilateral cooperation to conclude a mutual recognition agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November."
