Construction of Shin-Hanul nuclear reactors Nos. 1 and 2 is finished, while that of Nos. 3 and 4 has been launched.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Oct. 30 said it held ceremonies to mark the completion of the first two plants and the groundbreaking for the second pair at the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power's Hanul Nuclear Power Plant compound in Uljin-gun County, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.
In his congratulatory speech at the events, President Yoon Suk Yeol said, "We're seeing a 'nuclear renaissance' that has opened a global market for nuclear power plants worth over KRW 1,000 trillion," adding, "We'll blaze the path for exports of nuclear power plants."
"We'll do our best to devise a 2050 mid- to long-term roadmap and enact a Special Act on Support for the Nuclear Power Plant Industry."
Plant No. 3 will be finished in 2032 and No. 4 in 2033.
The latter two reactors, which symbolize the restoration of the nation's nuclear plant ecosystem, is a large-scale construction project with an estimated cost of KRW 11.6 trillion. The venture is also expected to employ 7.2 million laborers over the next eight years.
