The Ministry of Defense has formed ties with NATO for joint research and development (R&D) in advanced science and technology.

The ministry said, "As of March 1, we entered a partnership with the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO)."

As an STO partner country, Korea can act as a member state on the body's board of directors and perform joint R&D in cutting-edge science and technology.

The STO promotes cooperation in advanced science and technology among NATO member countries. Korea is the third to join the partnership after Japan and Australia.

The ministry said membership will lay the cornerstone for multilateral cooperation with Europe in science and technology for defense, and offer an opportunity to greatly advance bilateral cooperation with NATO.

"Korea's entry into the NATO STO partnership will be a key opportunity to boost research cooperation with advanced sci-tech countries and expand the scope of activities of domestic defense think tanks," said Choi Jang-sik, head of the ministry's Advanced Force Planning Bureau. "We will continue ministry-level efforts."
