Applications for educational activity subsidies for children from low-income multicultural families will start being accepted next month.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on April 21 said eligible for the support are children ages 7-18 from multicultural families whose household income falls below 100% of the median figure. The goal is to expand educational opportunities, remove learning gaps and strengthen career competencies for such students.

Applications can be submitted to any of the 231 family or multicultural family centers nationwide. The process has two rounds, with the first being from May 2-30 and the second from July 1-31.

The annual subsidy per student is KRW 400,000 for elementary school, KRW 500,000 for middle school and KRW 600,000 for high school. The amount will come in a lump sum either in June (first round) or August (second) depending on the application period in the form of an NH Nonghyup credit card (Chaeum) or accumulated points.

All funds provided must be used by the end of November. Any unused balance will be automatically removed.

The subsidies can be used to buy textbooks and guides to certifications or qualifications, pay for study room fees, and cover the cost of materials for arts and vocational training.
