Jeju Island on May 1 announced its completion of overall inspections of all sectors including transportation and accommodations ahead of its hosting of the second senior officials' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit from May 3-16.

The Jeju government will globally promote the island's distinct natural environment, historical and cultural value, and future vision by using the meetings, which is expected to draw over 3,200 participants.

The 14-day conference will have 73 meetings such as those for senior officials, ministers by sector and working-level groups.

The island has completed reviews of all sectors to ensure a successful hosting.

The National Intelligence Service and law enforcement, firefighting and safety agencies held a large-scale comprehensive training to counter terrorism and checked their preparation for crises.

An emergency medical response system was also set up in cooperation with nearby hospitals. Jeju International Airport also completed preparations for tourism information on the island and shuttle bus operations.

In addition, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries from April 30 to May 1 hosted the fifth APEC Ocean-related Ministerial Meeting in Busan.

Some 150 high-ranking officials attended the event such as ministers and vice ministers from government departments for marine and fisheries affairs in 21 APEC member states, including Papua New Guinean Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Jelta Wong.

The agenda discussed at the meeting included response to climate change, management of marine waste, crackdown on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and reinforcement of marine cooperation via innovative technology.
