President Lee Jae Myung next week will give a keynote speech at the 80th United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly.


His spokesperson Kang Yu-jung on Sept. 2 told a briefing at the Office of the President in Seoul that the president from Sept. 23 will attend the U.N. General Assembly High-level Week as president of the U.N. Security Council.

"The U.N. General Assembly High-level Week is slated for the third Tuesday in September as the world's largest stage for multilateral diplomacy with the leaders of 193 countries attending," the spokesperson said. "This year is especially meaningful as it marks the U.N.'s 80th anniversary, so the gathering is expected to attract unprecedented attention from the international community."

"Through his attendance at this session, President Lee plans to bolster solidarity with the international community and conduct diplomatic activity to raise the Republic of Korea's status as a responsible global power."

He will also become the first Korean head of state to preside over an open debate given Korea's rotating presidency of the UNSC.

Spokesperson Kang added, "The plenary session will discuss the effects and opportunities that the rapid development of artificial intelligence will bring to global peace and security and seek joint responses from the international community."

"President Lee's participation in the U.N. General Assembly is expect to confirm the Republic of Korea's status as a trustworthy partner and further solidify the nation's leadership on the global stage of multilateral diplomacy."
