President Lee Jae Myung on Dec. 4 held his first phone talks with Romanian President Nicusor Dan and agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy and the defense industry, the Office of the President in Seoul said.

"I consider it significant that the recent exports of the Chiron (portable surface-to-air) missile and K9 self-propelled howitzers by Korean defense companies have helped boost Romania's defense capabilities," President Lee said. "I hope that outstanding Korean defense companies will keep contributing to strengthening Romania's defense capacity."

"I ask that Romania continues to show interest in allowing Korean companies roles in projects for new nuclear plants there."

President Dan responded by saying, "I highly value the technical know-how and reliability of Korea's defense industry," adding, "I hope for higher cooperation in the defense industry with Korea."

Both leaders agreed to seek two-way cooperation in ports and infrastructure and bolster interpersonal exchanges and cultural ties. They also pledged to hold talks in person whenever possible to expand practical collaboration.
