Events at KCCs abroad

Books and Banchan spotlights South Korea’s genre-bending, and social and politically focused contemporary literature. Hosted by Saimi Jeong, Walkley-Award winning journalist whose work has appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, CHOICE and on FBi Radio, and Suzanne Leal, author of novels The Teacher’s Secret, Border Street and, most recently, The Deceptions, this dialogue focused gathering celebrates the recent surge in English-translations of Korean literature.

In this session the hosts will lead a discussion about The Disaster Tourist, Yun Ko-Eun’s eco-thriller novel about how the joy of food and tradition can bring a family that engages with the global dialog around climate activism and dark tourism. Reading the book beforehand is recommended, but not required, as Saimi and Suzanne will facilitate lively discussion about the themes in the text.

To sustain the conversation, banchan – small Korean side dishes – will be provided.

This event is in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum
