Hilgeum - NIHIL

NIHIL
'Nihil' is a Latin word that means 'nothing / empty'. The intent of this piece is to represent the 'emptiness' that we have all experienced at least once in our life. It was not only represented as a negative element but also as a new beginning and an opportunity to grow.
The scenes of the work show various phases, from even before the arrival of the 'emptiness' to the arrival of it and the inner growth that it brings with it.
The Gayageum and the Geomungo represent the busy life of modern man through a fast melody and, suddenly, the 'emptiness' arrives with the lyrical sound of the Haegeum. Subsequently, the agitation of the protagonist is represented, who tries to free himself from the 'emptiness', through the rhythm of the Dosalpuri and then returns to the initial notes that represent the ego evolved from this experience.
The Sinduri Sand Dunes of Taean, where the video was shot, are the largest sand dunes in Korea and have been designated as National Natural Monument # 431. Although the Sinduri sand dunes are large in size, they retain their original appearance and the crescent-shaped sand dunes, together with the humid air, almost create the atmosphere of a desert. So the music video was recorded, framing the sunset on the screen, which emphasizes the 'emptiness' even more.

[Presentation of the group]
The Hilgeum musical group is made up of three artists from Gayageum, Geomungo and Haegeum, all from the Korean National University of Arts. The purpose of these musicians is to express their voices within this chaotic world. All the members compose each single piece together trying to express the topics dealt with in the best possible way. They also try to interpret with music the questions that arise about society by creating their own unique musical universe.
