Intervals, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Jean Shin, the 13th KAFA Award Recipient, opens on June 21st at the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles.
The exhibition includes a new work entitled Surge created from remnants of technological consumption.
Referencing both electrical and natural phenomena, a vast collection of obsolete electrical chargers forms a dramatic image of a great wave that spans forty feet of the gallery wall.
Reflecting on our culture’s dependency on technology, the work speaks to the growing demand to power our mobile devices as well as the eminent threat of being outmoded.
Shown in the context of the Korean Cultural Center LA, Shin’s interpretation of the contemporary digital landscape makes a poignant connection to the tech savvy Korean Community that prides itself with producing and consuming the latest electronic gadgets. The dominance of Korea’s high-tech industries in the global market coincides with recent international popularity of K-POP.
In addition to Surge, other new works will be on view including Intervals, a series of collaged works on paper utilizing another outmoded technology. Created with horizontal strips of found audiotape, these playful works explore chance through endless repetition and variation. Much like the process of sound editing, the artist physically cuts and pastes together these magnetic tapes to form new configurations and compositions. The white space of the page is balanced by the alternating sides of the same magnetic tape that form the rhythms of black and brown lines.
Also presented are works from the recent project And We Move, a sound and video projection as well as print series that address music production.
Jean Shin is national recognized for her monumental installations that transform everyday objects into elegant expressions of identity and community. For each project, she amasses vast collections of a particular object – prescription pill bottles, sports trophies, sweaters – which are often sourced through donations from individuals in a participating community. Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in the United States, Shin attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1999 and received a BFA and MS from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She lives and works in New York City.
Her work has been widely exhibited in major national and international museums, including solo exhibitions at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona (2010), Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC (2009), the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia (2006), and The Museum of Modern Art in New York (2004). She will be having a solo exhibition at the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey this fall. She is represented by Tierney Gardarin Gallery in New York.
