‘The Student Orchestra Project’ started in 2011 as a part of the
‘school arts education project’ lead by the Ministry of Education. The project
is intended for elementary, middle, and high schools, and currently in 2013,
total of 400 schools in Korea are funded by the Ministry of Education. Initially
founded as a program to play a pivotal role in school art education programs, it
helps the students experience activities in diverse genres of art under the
public education system. The format is similar to that of Venezuela’s "El
Sistema", but ‘The Student Orchestra Project’ is a bit different from El Sistema
in the sense that it not only embraces wandering children, it also brings back
those kids to schools where they belong, and provide each of them with
opportunities to experience art.
‘The Student Orchestra Chamber Ensemble’ is composed of representative
members from each of the schools. Aging from 10 to 15, the members of the
ensemble each have different backgrounds and different characteristics. Together
with their mentors from Seoul National University, the 14 members of ‘The
Student Orchestra Chamber Ensemble’ will each show off their ability and skills,
and their passionate stage will deliver the message of ‘change’ and the power of
music to the audience.
