Events at KCCs abroad

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Singapore partnered with the Seoul Tourism Organization and Gardens by the Bay to present the ‘Royal Family’s Walk’ lantern exhibition at the Singapore Mid-Autumn Festival that runs from September 18th to October 4th.

The ‘Royal Family’s Walk’ lantern exhibition depicts the historical scene of 11 figures, including the King, Queen, upper court ladies, eunuchs, and chief bodyguard, taking a stroll in the Kyeongbokgung Palace during the Joseon Dynasty. The lanterns displayed in the ‘Royal Family’s Walk’, made with Korean traditional paper, made its debut last year at the annual Seoul Lantern Festival organised by the Seoul Tourism Organisation.

Gardens by the Bay, a major tourist attraction and national garden, organises the annual Mid-Autumn Festival, the equivalent to Korea’s Chuseok that takes place around September and October every year.

Singaporeans celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by sharing mooncake with their family, and express gratitude towards the gods for blessing them with a bountiful harvest through lighting lanterns. This is similar to Korea’s Chuseok holiday, where Koreans gather with their families to enjoy songpyeon, a traditional moon-shaped rice cake, and prepare ancestral memorial ceremonies to express their gratitude towards their ancestors for a bountiful harvest.

The Mid-Autumn Festival organised by Gardens by the Bay this year embraces the themes of Family Reunion and Community Spirit in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ambassador Ahn Young-jip said: “It is exceptionally meaningful to be able to present the ‘Royal Family’s Walk’ lantern display at Gardens by the Bay during Mid-Autumn Festival, a holiday that holds deep meaning to the citizens of both countries. I hope that the solidarity and cooperation between Korea and Singapore will become more steadfast through this collaboration of hope and friendship between the two countries on the 45th anniversary of our bilateral relations.”

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Gardens by the Bay will be conducting a light-up ceremony on 18th September to commemorate the start of Mid-Autumn Festival 2020.
