Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea and Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity announced that Korea ranked 11th at the 2012 International Olympiad in Informatics(IOI) with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

320 students from 86 countries participated in the competition and all the Korean students secured medals putting Korea on the 11th place. This was a better outcome than the 17th place in 2011.

The first International Olympiad in Informatics was held started in Bulgaria in 1989 with 13 European countries participating. The goals of the IOI are to bring together, challenge, and give recognition to young students (under age 20) from around the world who are the most talented in informatics (computer science), and to foster friendship among these students from diverse cultures. Each participating country can send a delegation of four students.

Korea started to join the competition in 1992 and participated every time since then.
