Recalls placed on Renault Samsung's SM5 for engine stalling problems

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea (Minister: H.E. Mr. Suh Seoung-hwan) announced that it placed a rectifying measure (recall) on the SM5 manufactured and sold by Renault Samsung Motors owing to engine stalling problems.

This recall came to be placed after a possibility had been detected that could give rise to engine stalling or the engine RPM's becoming unstable due to faulty connections of internal pins that link the engine wiring to the ignition coil wiring.

The targets of the recall will be the 161,700 units of the SM5 gasoline/LPLi models manufactured between October 28, 2009 and May 2, 2013.

Owners of the said motor vehicleswill be eligible for a free repair service (removal of the problematic connector, and then linking of the ignition coil's wiring with the engine wiring in a direct manner) at direct management service stores or other affiliated repair stores of Renault Samsung Motors starting from April 28, 2014.

With respect to this recall, the automaker Renault Samsung Motors will inform its affected customers of this measure via post, providing detailed information necessary to address the current situation. Other inquiries can be directed to the customer center of Renault Samsung Motors at Tel. 080-300-3003.

For the vehicle owners who had already received repairs on their cars before this recall measure was put in place, it is recommended that they request a reimbursement to the automaker for their repair costs.

MOLIT stated that it expects wider participation from the public at its Motor Vehicle Faults Report Center (website: www.car.go.kr and telephone: 080-357-2500) for better securing of the public's safety from faulty vehicles, and added that it has started a "Recall Notification Service" that informs customers of his/her vehicle's recall measure subjection via SMS and email, in addition to doing so via the post, from January 2013. Also, a vehicle owner will also be able to receive detailed information on recall services if he/she becomes a member of the website of the Motor Vehicle Faults Report Center.
