Geumjeong District will hold its ‘1st Geumjeong Sanseong Fortress Makgeolli Festival’ around Spo1 Park, Geumjeong Sanseong Fortress and the Pusan National University area from May 27 through 29.

The festival aims to promote Geumjeong Sanseong Fortress (literally Geumjeong Mountain Fortress), designated as Historic Site No. 215 and Geumjeong Sanseong Makgeolli – the 1st traditional Korean liquor (and often referred to in English as “Korean rice wine”).

The festival will begin with an opening ceremony on May 27 at 4 p.m. at Spo1 Park, which will include fireworks and celebratory performances. Through May 29, a variety of Makgeolli experience events – making Makgeolli soap, making Makgeolli and Makgeolli vinegar, a Makgeolli cocktail show, a Makgeolli running man and more - will take place at Spo1 Park.

Various events are scheduled to take place around Geumjeong Sanseong as well.

Since the fortress walls that extend across much of Mt. Geumjeong stretch a total of 18,845 meters, some 18,845 cups of Makgeolli will be offered to hikers from May 28 to 29 at the East Gate and North Gate of Geumjeong Sanseong Fortress. The event begins around 9 a.m. and makgeolli will be served on a first come first served basis. Hikers can also participate in taking photos at designated sites around Geumjeong Sanseong to win prizes.

From May 27 through 29, a “Welcome to Geumjeong Sanseong” event will organize a variety of programs including on the Makgeolli manufacturing process and historic cultural programs.

In addition, street events and street parties with musical entertainment will be held in front of Pusan National University and the art market in Oncheoncheon’s pedestrian lanes as well.

On May 28 from 5:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. a moonlight walking event starting from Beomeosa Temple to the East Gate of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress will provide hikers with a unique experience of hiking up Mt. Geumjeong in the moonlight.
