- Korea strengthens its leadership in radio waves in the Asia-Pacific region
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that Korean experts were elected as chairmen at the APT Conference Preparation Group meetings for the World Radio Conference (WRC-23) held online from September 24 to 25.
Dr. Wee Kyu Jin was elected chairman for the plenary group, and Mr. Lim Jae Woo, a researcher at the National Radio Research Agency (RRA), as chairman for the mobile network working group, for a four-year term (2020-2023).
Dr. Wee Kyu Jin has been representing Korea at WRC meetings since 1995 to secure Korea’s rights to use radio waves, and he was re-elected as chairman of the APG.
APG is an organization under the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT*) and is organized to coordinate and form common opinions among the 38 APT member countries to efficiently prepare for the WRC, which is held every four years.
* APT (Asia-Pacific Telecommunity): A regional organization established in 1979 under the joint leadership of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (UN ESCAP) and ITU (International Telecommunication Union).
This meeting is the first of the six meetings to be held to steer the APG by 2023. At the meeting, the steering committee, chairpersons, and work plans needed to operate the APG for four years have been decided.
The APG-23 consists of four members, a chairperson, two vice chairpersons, and one chairperson of the editorial committee.
The working group shall be divided into five areas as before, but as each country recognizes the importance of continuously increasing international distribution of radio waves and as various countries express their willingness to participate, it shall be operated as a co-chair system if necessary.
In addition, for the next four years, subgroups corresponding to a total of 23 agenda items* of WRC-23 will be organized under the work group, and experts in the field of radio waves from each country will participate to continue professional and in-depth discussions.
* e.g. 3GHz to 11GHz mobile network frequency distribution, development of 27.5-29.1GHz band non-geostationary orbit ESIM operation conditions.
Director-General Oh Yong-soo of the Radio Wave Policy Bureau at the MSIT said, "Korean experts being elected as APG-23 chair can be interpreted as a result of Korea's improved competitiveness and leadership in wireless communication technology, for example the world's first deployment of commercial 5G network. Based on our leadership in the Asia-Pacific region, we will reflect our national interests on the international stage as much as possible and further strengthen our international influence in the field of radio and telecommunications, and to that end, the government will continue to expand support."
