APEC Economies Gather for the 10th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting to Achieve Food Security and Innovate Agri-food Systems in the Region
Sejong, 5 August 2025 — The 10th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) will be held on 10 August in Songdo CONVENSiA in Incheon. At the meeting, under the theme of “Driving Innovation in Agri-food Systems for Shared Prosperity,” 21 APEC economies will discuss the ways to strengthen the food security and innovate the agri-food systems in the Asia-Pacific region.
The 21 APEC economies include the Republic of Korea, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, 7 ASEAN economies, 5 economies of the Americas, 3 economies of Oceania, and the Russian Federation.
* Seven ASEAN economies are the Kingdom of Thailand, Malaysia, the Republic of Indonesia, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of Singapore, the Republic of the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.
* Five economies of the Americas are the United States of America, Canada, the Republic of Chile, the United Mexican States, and the Republic of Peru.
* Three economies of Oceania are the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand, and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.
The Republic of Korea (ROK), as the chair of the APEC FSMM, will present as a topic the sharing of innovation practices in agri-food systems of member economies as well as the ways for cooperation for applying artificial intelligence to agriculture. The ROK will also lead the discussion on innovation of the agri-food field. Cooperation in AI, as well as response to changing demographic structures, is a topic of in-depth discussion. At the meeting, the APEC economies will adopt the Joint Ministerial Statement emphasizing the efforts for innovation in all the aspects, including technologies and policies, as a solution to multiple crises such as climate crisis and supply chain disruptions.
From 8 to 9 August, the APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security (PPFS), a working-level consultative body to support the APEC FSMM, will hold a workshop, a plenary meeting, a working group’s joint meeting, etc. Through such activities, participants from 21 APEC economies will share the ways for public-private cooperation to spread agricultural innovation, agricultural policies using AI, etc. The participants will also share the progress in the implementation of the Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030 (Roadmap 2030), and finalize the revisions to the terms of reference for the PPFS.
The Agricultural Technical Cooperation Working Group (ATCWG) (4 to 6 August) and the High Level Policy Dialogue on Agricultural Biotechnology (HLPDAB) (5 to 6 August / 8 August) will discuss research and development (R&D) and the ways for technical cooperation to address the food security of the Asia-Pacific region.
H.E. Song Miryung, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said: “Global food supply is growing more unstable, driven by climate crisis and global supply chain disruptions. At this critical moment, it carries great significance for the Republic of Korea to have a valued opportunity to discuss the ways for food security cooperation with APEC economies.”
Minister Song added: “I hope that the APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting will serve as an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation with APEC economies in the field of agriculture. And I hope that the Republic of Korea’s agricultural technologies, such as smart farms, agricultural equipment, etc., as well as Korean agricultural food products, will play a contributing role in helping achieve food security in the Asia-Pacific region.”
