"Creating a Safe Everyday Life Together through Our Concern"
Hosting the Commemoration Ceremony for the Prevention of Violence Against Women Week 2024
- Launched the Prevention of Violence Against Women Week (Nov. 25 - Dec. 1) and hosted the Government-level commemoration ceremony on November 25 (Monday)
- Awarded the Presidential Commendation to Dr. Lee Moon-hwi, Director of the Gynecology Department at Cheju Halla General Hospital, for his contributions to the recovery of victims’ everyday lives
- Hosted various events including a symposium on free legal support for victims of emerging types of violence
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF) and the Women's Human Rights Institute of Korea will hold the "2024 Commemoration Ceremony of the Prevention of Violence Against Women Week" at the Bankers Club (Jung-gu, Seoul) on the afternoon of November 25 (Monday), marking the designated Prevention of Violence Against Women Week* (November 25 - December 1, referred to as the 'Prevention Week').
* November 25 is designated by the UN as the International Day for the Prevention of Violence against Women, and since 2020, the government has been operating it as the “Prevention of Violence Against Women Week,” merging “the Sexual Violence Prevention Week, the Domestic Violence Prevention Week and the Prevention of Violence against Women Week following the enforcement of the Framework Act on Prevention of Violence Against Women in 2019.
Themed "Creating a Safe Everyday Life Together through Our Concern," the Prevention Week will feature a ceremony and public participation events to reaffirm the importance of creating a safe everyday life together.
At the Prevention Week commemoration ceremony, a video will be shown on the theme "Newly Evolving Female Violence, such as Deepfake, and What We Need to Do Together for a Safe Everyday Life," emphasizing the necessity for active interest and participation of the people in preventing violence against women and supporting victims.
Additionally, the Presidential Citations and other awards will be given to individuals, institutions, and organizations dedicated to preventing violence against children and women and to supporting victims.
The Presidential Citation will be awarded to Dr. Lee Moon-hwi, the director of the Gynecology Department at Cheju Halla General Hospital, who has diligently supported the recovery of sexual violence victims and provided emergency kits even during a medical strike.
Other programs include a mixed acapella performance wishing for the healing and recovery of victims, and a performance symbolizing steps taken together for a safe everyday life.
Prior to the Prevention Week, the winning entries from the "Violence Prevention Photo Contest" (Oct. 10 - Oct. 28) can be viewed at the online photo exhibition (Nov. 11 - Dec. 6, on www.stopweek.co.kr) and the challenge "Please Join Us in Taking 136,600 Steps to Eradicate Deepfake Sex Offenses" continues until November 26 (Tuesday).
Additionally, during the Prevention Week, academic symposiums, special policy discussions, and joint campaigns with international organizations will be held.
On November 27 (Wednesday), a symposium on free legal support for victims of emerging types of violence will discuss past achievements and future directions for improvement.
On December 10 (Tuesday), a special policy discussion on nationwide violence prevention policies will be held with women's policy bodies from 16 cities and provinces to develop future strategies for regional public-private collaboration in violence prevention.
From November 20 to December 10, in collaboration with the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality and the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre, the MOGEF will operate a publicity space connected to the government's commemoration ceremony, focused on preventing violence against women. This initiative includes online joint campaigns such as a relay of messages aimed at “preventing female violence, including deepfake sex crimes.”
Shin Young-sook, the Deputy Minister of the MOGEF, stated, "We sincerely thank everyone who has strived to make our society safer from female violence, and we hope that the Prevention of Violence Against Women Week will bring about meaningful change through collaboration between the government and the private sector."
She added, "The MOGEF will continue to enhance legal and institutional support to prevent female violence and to solidify a victim protection system."
