- Public call for cloud service providers (CSPs) to open by the fourth week of June
The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Yoo Sang-im, hereinafter referred to as “MSIT”) and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (President Park Yoon-kyu, hereinafter referred to as “NIPA”) held a joint briefing session on May 29 (Thursday) at COEX, Seoul, for cloud service providers (CSPs) and other relevant stakeholders. The session was organized to outline the government’s plans to procure GPUs and lease additional GPU capacity from CSPs.
Following the adoption of a KRW 1.63 trillion supplementary budget for 2025, MSIT has initiated preparations for two major initiatives:
- A KRW 1.46 trillion GPU acquisition project, aimed at securing and building high-performance GPU infrastructure through public-private collaboration, to support domestic universities, research institutes, and industries.
- A KRW 172.3 billion GPU leasing project, under which GPU resources owned by cloud service providers will be leased for use in the tentatively named “World Best LLM” project, as well as for AI R&D activities across Korea’s academic and industrial sectors.
The briefing provided detailed explanations of the project objectives and policy direction, followed by a comprehensive overview of the upcoming public call, including the application process, evaluation criteria, and terms of support. A Q&A session was also held to engage directly with participants.
MSIT and NIPA plan to complete the submission process for CSP applications by the fourth week of June. Evaluation, selection, and contract signing are scheduled to be finalized by July, after which GPU procurement and leasing—along with resource allocation to academia, industry, and research institutions—will begin without delay.
Detailed information about the public call is available on the official websites of MSIT and NIPA.
