To express its intention of co-hosting the 4th UN Ocean Conference with Chile at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be attending the 3rd UN Ocean Conference to be held in Nice, France from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 13.
The UN Ocean Conference is the highest-level meeting of UN member states, relevant international organizations, and NGOs on oceans to discuss Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development) of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Korea is trying to co-host the 4th UN Ocean Conference with Chile in 2028.
The UN Ocean Conference is hosted jointly by developed and developing countries every three years. The developed country hosts the plenary session, with the developing country hosting the high-level meeting a year in advance. The 2nd UN Ocean Conference held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022 (co-hosted by Portugal and Kenya) was attended by the UN Secretary-General and heads of state from 24 UN member states.
The 3rd UN Ocean Conference will be themed “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.” Minister Kang Do-hyung plans to attend the UN Ocean Conference to emphasize the importance of international cooperation for sustainable oceans and express the will to co-host the 4th UN Ocean Conference with Chile.
