Tourists in Busan will be given the chance to enjoy traditional songs and dances that were performed at royal palaces in ancient times.

The Busan National Gugak Center will present a special performance, “The Queen’s Banquet,” at the Haeundae Grand Hotel from July 28 until Dec. 27.

Over the five-month run, the show will bring to life a composite art of court banquet dances, known as Gungjungjeongjae (궁중정재, 宮中呈才), as well as present a reenactment of the queen changing into her formal attire for special ceremonies.

The audience will also be able to indulge in a range of court dances, songs and other traditions that have been handed down through the generations across Gyeongsang Province.

The Busan National Gugak Center’s upcoming show, ‘The Queen’s Banquet,’ features a reenactment of the queen putting on her full-dress uniform before attending a special banquet. The show will kick off on July 28 and run until Dec. 27 in Busan.

A total of 25 dancers and instrumentalists from the city’s gugak center will tell the story where Heaven sends a king and a queen down to Earth as the people perform a ritual praying for a peaceful reign across the nation. The following performance will allow the audience to see the queen changing into her traditional court dress and preparing for a special ceremony during a quiet morning at the palace.

The hour-long performance will feature a group dance that was traditionally performed in tune with jongmyojeryeak, royal court music written for rites performed at the Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul that were held in honor of the deceased Joseon kings and queens. It will also showcase other forms of traditional court dance from many regions across the country, such as a crane dance, or musanhyang (무산향, 舞山香), a different kind of traditional court dance.

The show consists of three sections. In the first part, there will be a court dance being performed against the backdrop of a flamboyant hologram and images projected onto the screen. The second part will revive the changing of court garments by the queen, representing the sophisticated and showy beauty of the court costumes.

Finally, the audience will be called up to the stage to mingle with the performers and to dance together as the show wraps up.
