Traditional Korean alcoholic beverages and side dishes can be enjoyed at a traditional Hanok house festival in Seoul next month.
The 2016 Korean Traditional Liquor & Food Festival will be held at the Namsangol Hanok Village in Jung-gu District, Seoul, on May 19 and 20. The event is organized by the Institute of Traditional Korean Food.

Children and international students show off their hand-made rice cakes during a traditional food festival at Unhyeongung Palace in Seoul. A similar festival for traditional alcoholic beverages and their accompanying side dishes will be held at the Namsangol Hanok Village in Seoul next month.
The festival will host competitions, exhibits, tastings, cooking classes and a lecture program. The competitions will be held in two categories: one to find the best professional specialized in traditional beverages and the other to find the best drink and side dish pairing.
Competitors in the traditional beverage category will need to display and introduce their hand-made beverages on stage, and participate in a blind taste test so that their various liquors can be evaluated. Traditional beverage experts will assess each submission to find the best professional brewer or distiller of traditional Korean alcoholic beverages.
The second competition is about selecting the best pairings between traditional liquors and side dishes. Teams composed of five people will display their own hand-made liquors and accompanying side dishes to match, giving judges a chance to taste them all and to determine a winner.
There will be an exhibit about traditional liquors that stimulated all five senses, and one that will recreate traditional
jumak, Joseon-era taverns, from across the Korean Peninsula's eight regions. There will also be an exhibit about startups in the sector. Small, local companies will also display about 60 varieties of traditional beverage made from local ingredients.
The festival will also allow for first-hand tastings. Visitors will be able to participate in cooking classes where they can make their own
makgeoli rice beer, make malt and cook side dishes to accompany their drink. They will also be able to appreciate the various kinds of
makgeoli and side dish pairings that are enjoyed in many regions across the country, taste traditional beverages and enjoy a wide range of home-made liquors.
Finally, the festival will also include lectures for those who want to learn more about traditional alcoholic beverages and the importance of a delicious side dish.
