People use many measures to wisely prepare for the heat wave of summer, especially when they have the Dano traditional holiday on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. One method they use is to drink a traditional drink called
jehotang (제호탕, 醍醐湯) made from various Oriental medicinal herbs.
The name “
jehotang” means "a drink that is tasty and clears the mind." Joseon monarchs loved the seasonal, healthy drink on Dano. The department of court medicine for the Joseon royal family offered the drink to the ruling monarch in a belief that it would prevent him from getting sick due to the heat, and help to clear his mind and quench his thirst. After drinking the drink, the king would then offer some
jehotang to his household staff.
It's good to drink 'jehotang' in the summer, as it helps the inner organs, helps digestion and quenches the thirst. It's also good to drink 'jehotang' after drinking alcohol or eating salty food, such as stews or marinated fish.
The best-known medical book from Joseon times, the "Dongui Bogam" (동의 보감, 東醫寶鑑), said that
jehotang relieves the heat of the summer and any bad feelings in the pit of the stomach, and satisfies one's thirst. This is because of its ingredients of Oriental medicinal herbs, such as
baekdanhyang (백단향, 白檀香), or ground white sandalwood,
chogwa (초과, 草果), or a ground ginger-like fruit, and
omaeyuk (오매육, 烏梅肉), or powder made from immature fruit. These herbs help people to feel warm, cure colds, stops vomiting, and they relieve any bloated feeling or any stomach pain. The drink also has anti-cancer and anti-oxidative effects.
