Director Im Kwon-taek’s documentary “Hand in Hand" (1988), which is all about the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics, will be unveiled for the first time in 30 years as the opening film of the third Chungmuro International Musical Film Festival on July 6.
“Hand in Hand" (1988) was completed with the directing of Im Kwon-taek and a narration by Do-ol Kim Yong-ok, a professor at Hanshin University. It's the official documentary of the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games held by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Film Archive.
The film begins by showing the economic growth that took place in Korea in the 1970s and 1980s, the so-called "Miracle on the Hangang River," juxtaposing the ruins of the Korean War in the 1950s with shots of Seoul at the time of the Olympics. The documentary also shows the athletes’ superb achievements, and other impressive moments in and out of the stadia.
The executive office of the Chungmuro International Musical Film Festival said, "This documentary is released as a dedication to all Chungmuro filmmakers who participated in meaningful projects that convey a message of peace and coexistence between Seoul and PyeongChang. At the opening ceremony of the film festival this year, the documentary will be screened with the original film, a live narration and some performances.”
