The yakbang (pharmacy room) of Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul's Jongno-gu District from July 15 to Aug. 16 will offer traditional interactive programs.
Yakbang was the royal pharmacy during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Since its restoration in 2005, it has hosted exhibitions and traditional cultural experiences.
Visitors can try jehotang, a cold drink made with honey and ingredients used in hanyak (traditional medicine), and omija (Schisandra or magnolia berry) tea, both of which were enjoyed by the royal court. A daily limit of 200 cups will be served at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. or until supplies last.
Jehotang was a leading royal dessert drink from the Joseon era made by finely grinding the pulp of fruits such as dried skinless plums and amomum into powder, mixing them with honey, boiling it and then diluting it with cold water before drinking.
Omija tea is made by slowly steeping Schisandra berries in cold water.
From July 18 through Aug. 16, a program will allow visitors to make scented medicinal sachets at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays on a first-come, first-served basis.
Entry into the yakbang is free with admission to Changdeokgung.
