The Indian capital of New Delhi on July 31 saw fans grooving to K-pop hits at the K-pop India Contest 2020. The ninth edition of the event was organized by the Korean Culture India Fan Club (KCIFC) in partnership with the Korean Embassy and the Korea Tourism Organization and hosted by the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in India.
The performances were uploaded on the official Instagram account of the KCIFC as this year's event was held online given COVID-19. The regional round saw 17 contestants in the vocal category and 18 in the dance category. Each performer's video was uploaded on the club’s Instagram in real time, and viewers voted for their favorites. The participants gave mesmerizing performances of hits by popular K-pop bands such as BTS, ATEEZ, TWICE and ITZY and solo artists including IU, Lee Hi and AleXa.
"Preparation started way back in March and the plan for the live event was ready in April," said Prerna Tiwari, an organizing staff member of the KCIFC. "Due to the pandemic, however, everything came to a standstill. But the KCC decided to initiate the event online so we started preparing in June. The entire month of July was full of continuous hard work and effort."
The contest received a positive response, with more than 150,000 views over the first 24 hours from the time the first video was posted. "This made us happy since we've been working for this event for the past two months. This positive response has recharged us to work harder to promote Korean culture," Tiwari said.
KCC Director Kim Kum-pyoung also thanked the event's organizers in 18 selected cities in India, the contestants and K-pop fans for sending their love and support. The results of the regional round will come on Aug. 15 and the final is slated for next month.
