A group of firefighters have taken off their shirts for a good cause.

The Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters recently printed 1,000 calendars for the year 2015. What made the calendars special is that 13 firefighters were mobilized as topless models and that all the proceeds from sales would go to child burn victims.

All the participating firefighters had already proven themselves as models at the second Seoul Momzzang Firefighter Contest held last May. The word momzzang is a newly-coined word, often used among youth, which refers to someone who is physically toned, either male or female.

For the calendar project, they took off their heavy gear, fire suits and safety helmets once again, to stand in front of the camera. The shoot started in November. The momzzang firefighters gathered at a quay belonging to the Banpo Lifesaving Service in Dongjak-gu, southern Seoul, and showed off their six packs and tanned bodies, despite the freezing weather.

"The first time I got a call asking for my involvement, I was a bit hesitant, feeling shy to stand, shirtless, in front of the camera," said Lee Kang-soo, one of the 13 firefighters, who works at the Gangdong Fire Station. "But the cause was so good, I was happy to be part of the project."

The 1,000 calendars were given to public servants and to those in the firefighting business who donated KRW 10,000 or more for the treatment of burned children, raising KRW 5 million in total.

On December 24, the funds were awarded to Shin Jae-bin, a four-year-old burn victim who is under treatment at the Hallym University Medical Center in Yeongdeungpo-gu, southeastern Seoul.

On Christmas Eve, KRW 5 million in proceeds, raised from the sale of special calendars in which well-muscled firefighters posed for the camera, is given to Shin Jae-bin, a four-year-old burn victim who is currently receiving burn treatment at the Hallym University Medical Center.

The boy suffers second-degree burns on his shoulders, arms and thighs, after being doused with boiling oil by accident. His parents, with six children, are recipients of National Basic Livelihood Security support. He is now undergoing burn treatment at the hospital.

"Our firefighters risk their lives to rescue people, exposing themselves to all types of danger when in action. We've seen many people get burned and, this time, came up with the idea for a calendar as a way to help the burn victims," said Kwon Soon-kyeoung, administrator at the Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters.

"I hope that these efforts will give some hope to young burn victims and their families who might be in despair after such horrible accidents, so as not to have them lose courage," he added.

The headquarters plans to print more calendars so that the public, too, as well as the public servants, will be able to participate in the fundraising event by buying the mozzang firefighters calendar.
