Many media outlets expressed their condolences in regard to the terrorist attack against journalists at the weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France, on January 7.
In the attack that killed at least 10 people, including cartoonists and editors, and two police officers, the Korean media outlets said that it is an act of violence against democracy and that terrorism can never stop the freedom of the press.
The Kyunghyang Shinmun wrote in its editorial, "They shot the heart of democracy," on January 9, that, "The kind of actions that try to physically eliminate different opinions does not befit France, where tolerance is highly valued," and that, "There was a small version of the September 11 attacks in France, in the center of Europe, a country that is proud of its traditions of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity." The newspaper also wrote that, "The terrorists shot at the heart of democracy," and that, "If democracy dies, peace would disappear as well. We support the international solidarity for the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press, which are the core values of democracy."

The Dong-A Ilbo wrote in its editorial, "We are Charlie too... terrorism cannot threaten the freedom of the press," that, "There are thousands of ballpoint pens in the nearby Place de la République, which were left by citizens who support the freedom of speech," and that, "We sympathize with the international community's actions that resolutely defend the value of the freedom of the press against one of the worst terrorist attacks against the press."
The Segye Ilbo wrote in its article, "Al-Qaeda's terrorist attacks on France, trampling on world peace and the freedom of the press," spoke about, "Terrorism's unpardonable atrocities against human beings," and said that, "It is possible that people get offended by sarcasm by the media against their religion, because religion is sacred. However, even if so, they should have taken legal action or made a protest and should not have committed terrorist attacks to seek revenge."
The Dong-A Ilbo writes in its editorial that, 'We sympathize with the international community's actions that resolutely defend the value of the freedom of the press.'
The JoongAng Ilbo writes in an editorial on January 9 that, 'It is an illusion if one believes that terrorism can threaten the press to shut its mouth.'
The Hankyoreh wrote in its editorial, "The worst terrorist attack on the press that shocks the world," that, "It was merely a brutal crime that collateralizes the life of citizens and the press, which are the foundations of a democratic society, no matter what kinds of excuses they have," and that, "Attempts to change the reporting of the press by force will never be successful."
Finally, the JoongAng Ilbo wrote in its editorial, "We condemn the anti-civilization terror against the press," that, "It is an illusion if one believes that terrorism can threaten the press to shut its mouth," and that, "The press is no longer the press if it gives in to holy ground or to taboos. Religion cannot be an exception from criticism or sarcasm."
