In a remote mountain village of Vietnam, it has now become common to see students taking pictures.

The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service launched a joint program in September this year in Lao Cai, a mountainous region in northeast Vietnam. Their aid helped children and teenagers there to create visual art using photography and artistic camera techniques.

A group of 20 students, some of them from the Sapa Primary School and some from the Kim Dong Middle School, have since been actively engaged in taking photographs and undertaking other visual art activities, now part of their curriculum.

On top of that, educational programs aimed at local teachers have been offered to help give them a better understanding of how to educate their pupils about art in an effective manner. The teachers also learn about good examples of arts-related education, while they practice photography themselves.

The education project was launched by the Korean government last year in an effort to help Vietnam achieve sustainable development through education. It was made possible after the Education Office of the Lao Cai region and the Vietnamese branch of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) struck an agreement to cooperate on arts education for five years. In November 2013, the Korean government sent out a group of art instructors and program organizers to Vietnam, to host a series of educational programs specializing in photography.
