The government recently began providing official information about the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) to non-Korean speakers residing in Korea or elsewhere. Part of these new services includes a MERS hotline telephone number.

When people call 109 at any time around the clock, they will hear a Korean greeting and introduction followed by the English message, “For English, press one.” After pressing one, they will be transferred to an English-speaker and receive their MERS consultation.

People can also read MERS-related government information in English at the government's new official homepage for the disease (www.mers.go.kr). The “Press Release” section there provides information in English about MERS-related medical organizations, including the list of hospitals which have admitted or helped confirmed MERS patients. There are also press releases from the government concerning its response to the outbreak.

People can read the government’s MERS policies and get information about medical centers related to the disease in the ‘Press Release’ section of the government's new MERS-related website (www.mers.go.kr).

The government also provides a list of MERS-prevention measures and interpreting services for foreign workers. The Ministry of Employment and Labor has distributed guidance translated into 15 languages concerning how to prevent MERS and has distributed it to eight major support centers for foreign workers and to 22 branches across the country of the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRD). Information about MERS, such as preventative measures and how to report to medical authorities, can also be found at the homepage of the Employment Permit System (EPS, www.eps.go.kr) in many languages. Smartphone users can also read the same information from the EPS app.

Starting this week, the employment ministry said it will conduct an educational campaign about MERS prevention for the 1,607 foreign workers who come to Korea as part of its employment education program.

“We are providing interpreting services for non-Korean workers at the telephone consultation service hotline of the HRD (1577-0071) so that non-Koreans can report the disease or make enquiries without any communication difficulty,” the ministry said.
