The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate on Jan. 29 introduced resolutions supporting the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In the resolution, the U.S. Senate congratulated Korea on hosting the PyeongChang Games. It also expressed its will to support the alliance between Seoul and Washington.
The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., chair of the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy, and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.
The resolution was co-sponsored by 20 senators from both the ruling and opposition parties, including Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, Sen. John Barrasso, R-WY, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
The U.S. House of Representatives resolution was introduced by four representatives: Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., and Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif.
In the resolution, the House said that, “It reaffirms the strong and unwavering commitment of the United States to its ally, the Republic of Korea, to support, participate in and help ensure the safety and security of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”
It emphasized the significance of the upcoming sporting event by saying that, “We hope it will provide a real contribution to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia, and beyond.” The House also added that, “The 2018 Winter Olympics will serve as an international symbol of sportsmanship and fair play.”
