An aggressive blueprint eyes Korea rising to the ranks of one of the world's top three artificial intelligence (AI) powers by 2028.

The plan is to upgrade the national digital network focused on the transition of the nationwide 5G network to standalone mode and securing technology for the commercial application of 6G.

The announcement came on March 29 following the review and approval of the fourth Basic Plan for the Promotion of Information and Communications and the Activation of Convergence and the eighth Comprehensive Plan for an Intelligent Information Society at a March 27 meeting of the Information Communications Strategy Committee under the Ministry of Science and ICT.

This comprehensive strategy seeks to boost digital infrastructure including networks, cybersecurity and data.

The core is speed and connectivity, with plans to develop next-generation 6G commercial technology to fully launch the new standard by 2030. Improvement of the information protection management system will strengthen cybersecurity capabilities and a new national data integration platform seeks to create a high-quality data ecosystem.

Another focus is securing future human resources in stages by developing practical talent in phases from high school to graduate school students as well as core technologies like AI, semiconductors and quantum computing.

The transformation of the basic nature of industrial sites will expand intelligent informatization nationwide by integrating AI into major sectors such as manufacturing, health care, and agriculture and fisheries as well as disaster management and industrial safety.

To stimulate create a digitally inclusive environment, AI digital learning centers will be expanded and the distribution of assistive devices using information and communications technology for disabled people will be increased.

For smooth implementation, the plan is to devise detailed measures for execution and further strengthen inter-ministerial cooperation.
