For the 11th time, Korea has been elected to the United Nations (U.N.) Economic and Social Council.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 5 said the country will serve the 2027–29 term after its election the day before at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
Comprising 54 member states, the council is the world body's main platform for overseeing discussions on economy, society and development under the U.N. Charter.
Malaysia and the Maldives were also elected in the Asia- Pacific group along with Korea.
The ministry said, "As a responsible global leader and a member of the council's executive board, we will actively participate in discussions on major global issues such as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change and digital transformation and make tangible contributions to taking on the international community's common challenges in the economic, social and development sectors."
