For the third straight year, the United Nations (U.N.) has adopted a resolution jointly led by Korea and the Netherlands on artificial intelligence (AI) in the military domain.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul on Oct. 31 said the resolution "Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain and Its Implications for International Peace and Security" was adopted the day before by the first committee of the 81st U.N. General Assembly, with the support of 171 member states.
First adopted in 2024, this is the first and only U.N. resolution of its kind.
This year's version includes a provision for holding a "structured dialogue" on the responsible military use of AI in Geneva next year and in 2028. The event will attract U.N. member states, international organizations, academia, civil society and industry to discuss the latest developments in the topic, methods to ensure transparency, confidence-building measures and strategies for risk reduction.
The resolution also welcomed the launch of the Centre of Excellence on AI, Peace and Security under the U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research, as well as encouraged the development of a relevant glossary of terms and scenario-based drills.
Since co-hosting the Responsible AI in the Military Domain Summit with Amsterdam in 2023, Seoul has led discussions on international norms in this field.
The ministry will keep spearheading global cooperation and discussions on such norms to promote the responsible use of AI in the military domain and contribute to international peace and security.
