The Korean Cultural Centre is pleased to launch the <Virtual Artist Studio Visit> series.
Due to the prevailing pandemic situation for the past year, artists were removed from their familiar places to present their works when many exhibition spaces were forced to close with no clear idea on when to reopen while exhibition visitors also lost opportunities to meet their favourite artists and be enlightened by their unique perspectives which can be a guiding light in this unprecedented time of isolation.
Considering that social distancing is still an important parameter to overcome the COVID 19 pandemic, the KCC has prepared a series of virtual artist studio visits that can connect artists with their audiences safely from home. As the first season of the program, we invite prominent Korean Canadian artists to show us how they spend their stay-at-home time and what kind of new works they are envisioning and visualizing.
This program is planned to introduce a new episode on the last Thursday of each month.
Our first episode begins with a tour to the internationally recognized Canadian media artist Jin-me Yoon’s studio in Vancouver.
Jin-me Yoon is a Korean-born, Vancouver-based artist. Since the early 1990s, her lens-based practice has critically examined the construction of self and other in relation to her own direct and inherited history, as well as within broader geopolitical contexts. Unpacking stereotypical assumptions and dominant discourses, Yoon’s work has examined gender and sexuality, culture and ethnicity, citizenship and nationhood. Adopting a wider and wider lens over time, her practice has become a deep investigation into entangled local and global histories existing at specific sites within the context of transnationalism.
Jin-me Yoon’s practice, which stretches over thirty years, has witnessed the presentation of her work in over 200 solo and group exhibitions across North America, Asia, and Australia, as well as select institutions worldwide. Her work is held in 17 Canadian and International public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, Royal Ontario Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery and Seoul Museum of Art.
As Professor of Visual Arts at Simon Fraser University, she has mentored many students over the years, and has delivered 80 guest lectures throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in Korea, Mexico, Ireland, Japan, Spain and India. Recognized for her research contributions in the field of Art, in 2018, Jin-me Yoon was elected as a Fellow into the Royal Society of Canada, a council of distinguished Canadian scholars, humanists, scientists and artists. In 2009, she was selected as a finalist for the Grange Prize (AIMIA, the AGO’s Photography Prize); in 2013 she was awarded the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship; in 2017, Yoon was included in Landmarks/Repères, one of 12 leading Canadian artists commissioned to make work for Canada’s 150th anniversary. She was also a finalist for the prestigious Scotiabank Photography Award in 2020, celebrating excellence in Canadian Contemporary Photography.
