On September 12, 2024, Consul General Euy Whan Kim met with Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and Councilman Paul K. Yoon to discuss concerns over a recent fatal shooting incident involving a member of the Korean community in Fort Lee. During the one-hour meeting, Consul General Kim expressed the Korean community's concerns and agreed with the Fort Lee officials to establish thorough preventive measures and systems to ensure such tragedies do not recur. The Consulate General also pledged to support the city's efforts when necessary.
Key measures discussed included holding public hearings to gather input from mental health experts, 911 dispatchers, and community leaders, revising police protocols for incident response and firearm use, and conducting officer retraining.
Additionally, Consul General Kim called on the city to hold those responsible accountable for the incident. Prior to the meeting, the Consul General met with Amber Reed, President of AAPI New Jersey, and representatives of the Korean American Association of New Jersey to emphasize that this tragedy impacts not just the Korean community but all immigrant groups. He urged stronger cooperation among Asian communities through AAPI leadership to ensure this incident leads to meaningful change.
