1. Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Jae-shin and his Chilean counterpart Fernando Schmidt held the 5th
Korea-Chile High-Level Policy Consultation in Santiago, Chile, on June 24. In the meeting, the two sides
discussed in depth ways to bolster cooperation on bilateral issues, such as in government affairs,
economy, trade, resources and energy, as well as global issues and the international stage.
2. The two sides noted with satisfaction the development of Korea-Chile ties into a comprehensive and
cooperative relationship since the conclusion of the bilateral FTA in 2004. They agreed to mature the ties
in various fields, including not only economy and trade but also energy, resources, infrastructure, science,
technology, defense industry and culture on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations
on 2012.
3. The Korean delegation took note of the fact that the increase of Chilean grape and wine imports
following the conclusion of Korea’s first-ever FTA with Chile has raised the country’s image in Korea,
which, in turn, has contributed to expansion of bilateral cooperation beyond the economic sector. The
delegates asked for the Chilean side’s interest and support so that Korea can secure a stable supply
of Chilean minerals, indispensible to the country’s economy, which account for 80 percent of the country’s
imports from Chile.
° The Chilean side requested that the bilateral FTA be bolstered and that Korea streamline its quarantine
procedures on farm and livestock produce from the country.
4. The two sides appreciated that the Pagoda (whose dedication ceremony took place on May 25 with
Chilean President Moreno in attendance), which Korea set up in Chile in celebration of the country’s
200th anniversary of independence, serves as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries.
They agreed to hold the 2nd Joint Cultural Commission Meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary
of diplomatic relations in 2012, and discussed a variety of possible cultural exchange programs, including
K-pop exchanges, joint academic seminars, and film festivals.
5. The two delegations agreed that their countries should jointly address climate change, a common
challenge facing humanity, and that Chile will continue cooperation on Korea’s planned construction
of the Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station. They also concurred to work more closely on the international
stage, such as the UN and FEALAC (Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation).
