- MOF to hold a workshop for capacity building to support the establishment of Guidelines for Safe Port for Climate Change Response for 11 ASEAN countries
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be holding a workshop to strengthen the climate change response capacity of government port officials from 11 ASEAN countries from Wednesday, July 9 to Friday, July 11.
This workshop is a follow-up activity prepared after the “Establishment of Port Guidelines for Climate Change Response” was adopted as an official agenda at the 47th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group (MTWG)* meeting in September 2024 at the suggestion of Korea for the purpose of specifying the direction of cooperation with ASEAN countries.
* MTWG: A working-level consultative body in the maritime transport sector under the ASEAN Transport Ministers’ Meeting (ATM) with the participation of 10 ASEAN countries including Korea, China, Japan and international organizations such as IMO and UNESCAP
The workshop will include ▲presentations of Korea's port research results, ▲presentations of current issues in response to climate change in each country, and ▲discussions on future cooperation measures. Reflecting the results of the discussion, guidelines that consider the conditions of each country will be prepared by 2028 and included in the ASEAN Transport Development Plan, to be used as a practical standard to present climate risk management standards for port facilities and implementation plans for each country.
“I hope this workshop further strengthens the foundation for cooperation with ASEAN countries and serves as an opportunity for Korea’s port technology and policies to make a practical contribution to responding to global climate change,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
