Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Kyung-hwan (third from left) shakes hands with Mayor of Warnes Mario Cronembold at the naming ceremony for Avenida Corea, one of the main roads that will run through the new suburb of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, on March 8.
One of the main roads in a new suburb near Santa Cruz, Bolivia, has been named Avenida Corea. The decision was made to recognize Korea's assistance in helping to build the new suburb, modeled after Korea's own suburban apartment communities.
A naming ceremony for the new road was held in Santa Cruz on March 8, attended by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The arterial road is essentially an eight-lane expressway running north-south through the heart of the suburb, 80 m wide and 9.85 km in length.
The suburb is in near the major Bolivian cities of Santa Cruz, Warnes and Cotoca. It covers around 56 square kilometers, and is designed to include 100,000 households for up to 350,000 residents.
Since 2014, the Korea Land & Housing Corporation has been sharing its expertise in city development with the Bolivian government by sending trained personnel into the field there. Other Korean companies have also invested some USD 11.49 million in the project, participating in everything from conceptualization and master planning through to design.
"Construction of the Santa Cruz suburbs is a major project with some KRW 3.5 trillion on the line. Today's naming ceremony will get more Korean companies involved in the Santa Cruz development projects, and increase cooperation on infrastructure between Korea and Bolivia," said Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Kyung-hwan.
