Korea is again a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Nov. 23 said the country's election to the committee came the day before at the 24th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention hosted by UNESCO in Paris.

Under the convention, the intergovernmental committee, comprised of 21 countries among the 195 signatories, reviews and manages the conservation of World Heritage sites and discusses new ones.

To serve through 2027 as a member of the Asia-Pacific group, Korea earned its fourth term on the committee following those in 1997, 2005 and 2013.

Eight countries including Korea that day were elected to the committee: Ukraine, Vietnam, Kenya, Senegal, Lebanon, Turkiye (Turkey), Jamaica and Kazakhstan.

"Our election to the World Heritage Committee stemmed from active diplomatic negotiations based on Korea's contributions to the World Heritage system," the ministry said. "We will proactively contribute to developing the World Heritage system considering the tasks of the new era like response to climate change and coexistence of regional communities and heritage."
