Korea.net has launched a new collaborative project with its honorary reporters around the world. Each honorary reporter will write a story on the same topic, but from each of their own home cities. The stories will then be shared with our community of Korea.net readers.

For the first subject in the series, Korea.net asked our honorary reporters to send in a touching story from their home communities. Here's our first story on this subject, from El Salvador.

Salvadorans have gone through a civil war, natural disaster and recently high rates of violence. This is killing the dreams of many young people who dream of becoming professionals. Nonetheless, in spite of El Salvador's social problems, life shows us that there are people who dream high and struggle hard in order to attain their dreams, despite the adversities in front of them. One such person is Armando Madrid.

Armando Madrid is blind and in his 30s. Of humble origins, he lives in one of the most dangerous places in El Salvador. He was born blind, and 14 years ago he searched for help at the Salvadoran Institute of the Invalid. There, he put away any possibility of seeing for the first time. Madrid was sad, but he aimed to overcome his difficulties.

He decided to attend university and after many efforts and much tenacity, last year he presented his thesis and qualified for an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of El Salvador. Madrid is the first blind person in the history of the journalism department there to graduate in that specialty. His thesis will be presented in braille and will be the first in the whole university to be presented this way. Currently, Madrid is a journalist at Radio Nacional. However, he's also a very talented musician, a national footballer, and a member of the national athletics team. He's a total inspiration to us young people. The story of Madrid inspires many young people to be optimistic in the face of their adversities.
