One month prior to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Korean Cultural Center in the U.K. (KCC) opened its Winter Wonders of PyeongChang exhibition. The exhibition, presented by U.K. Sport and the KCC, ran until Feb. 17. It introduced the disciplines, the athletes and the venues of the PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Games and was a celebration of the Olympic Spirit and the strong friendship between the U.K. and Korea.
Soohorang and Bandabi greeted visitors to the KCC exhibition, and everyone stopped to take a picture with them. On the wall next to them, visitors were able to get acquainted with what Soohorang and Bandabi are. Information about the events, disciplines, medals and athletes at the PyeongChang Games was also present.
On the left is Korean speed-skater Shim Sukhee who won the gold in the 3,000 m relay at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. On the right is the 10-time European gold medalist Elise Christie.
The main section of the exhibition included 16 photographs of sublime moments from winter sports from the last two Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and Vancouver, as well as other significant tournaments. The athletes in the pictures are representatives of Korea or of the U.K.
A map at the exhibition shows famous places in Gangwon-do Province.
Part of the exhibition was dedicated to the cities of Pyeongchang, Jeongseon and Gangneung, the three Olympic host cities. A map of the region marked the location of the most significant Olympic venues. The pictures around the map highlighted three sights, one for each city. In Pyeongchang there is the Woljeongsa Temple, located on Odaesan Mountain. The highlight of Gangneung is the Ojukheon House, one of the oldest wooden residential buildings in Korea where the artist, poet and calligraphist Shin Saimdang once lived. The waves of the Auraji-gang River run through Jeongseon. It's believed that the traditional folk song " Arirang" originated in this city.
The exhibitions introduces local specialities of Gangwon-do.
The last section of the exhibition showed delicacies from Gangwon-do, along with information about their ingredients. Among them are ginseng chicken soup with potato dough, potato savory pancakes, mountain herb mixed rice and buckwheat noodles.
