NigeriaHave you ever watched a performance of jazz and Korean folk songs? It’s like a perfect musical harmony of east and west.
On Nov. 14, the Korean Embassy and Korean Cultural Center in Nigeria held a cultural festival to celebrate Korea's National Foundation Day, themed “Experience new iconic culture” at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
This year marked the 38th year of bilateral relations between Korea and Nigeria. Each year, the Korean embassy and cultural center invite artists from Korea to perform and showcase the cultural performance to the people of Nigeria and diplomats from other countries. This year, the iconic Korean folk music band SsingSsing, led by folk song singer Lee Hee-moon, was invited and they showed off how Korean folk songs meets jazz for a unique blend of music and comedy.
They were originally created for the national theatre of Korea and the Korean men take a hilarious look for male and female roles through the use of Korean folk music and jazz.
The performance captivated the audience and the extraordinary
sorikkun (Korean folk singer) was the highlight of the night. These artists wowed the invitees as they laughed throughout the performance. They brought humor to the characters they played. Indeed music is the language we all understand.
The national day does not only come with just a performance, but the invitees get to enjoy and have a taste of Korean cuisine.
I enjoyed every bit of the night, as it felt like I was in Korea.
