A few weeks ago, I went to watch the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju. While preparing for my three-day trip there, I stumbled on a bus tour in Jeollanam-do Province on FINA's official website. My curiosity was aroused so I went to check it out, and a diverse selection of tours at reasonable prices greeted me.
I opted to go on a so-called Monday healing day tour that cost just KRW 9,900. How great was that? The day tour started from U.Square Bus Terminal and the participants were instructed via text message to gather at Gate 32 before 8:40 a.m.
Chungnyeongsan Mountain Cypress Forest
I had a great time hiking in the lush green forest, which is also called "healing forest" due to the abundance of phytoncide there. The plants and trees emit this aromatic substance to offer natural aromatherapy in the forest. Scientifics studies have found that phytoncide boosts the human immune system.
My time in the forest was so good that I felt a little sad when departing for our next destination.
Unique delicacy for lunch
This mouthwatering dish yongaptang (용압탕) is something I'd never heard of before despite living in Korea for seven years. This food is made from duck meat boiled in healthy herbs and spices and comes with sticky rice and lentils. It was wonderful.
The author heartily recommends this delicacy for visitors to the southern part of Gwangju.
Piram Seowon Confucian Academy
In July last year, the UNESCO World Heritage list added nine sewon (Confucian academies from the Joseon Dynasty era) throughout the country. And to my great pleasure, part of my tour was a stop to the famed Piram Seowon.
This seowon was dedicated to Kim In-hu, a leading Neo-Confucian scholar of the Joseon era.
The architecture at Piram Seowon was great.
Our tour guide Kim Seung-hui did an amazing job explaining the functions of the academy's halls. I was also honored to know that she was a direct descendant of a scholar and teacher who attended this seowon.
This is the statue of our tour guide's grandfather displayed at the museum next to the academy.
This trip was truly amazing and highly recommended. I returned home to Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, with richer knowledge about the nature, delicacy and history of Gwangju.
