Staying at home sounds fun and relaxing except if one cannot leisurely go and hang out at shopping malls or catch up with friends.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the recent surge in cases in Malaysia, our government's order to restrict movement seeks to curb the spread of the pandemic. Following the #stayathome movement, the popular dalgona coffee that is trending in Korea has also become a craze in Malaysia.
Almost every day, people are trying to make this coffee and upload photos of it on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok. I also started to make it last month as I saw the YouTuber Blimey's Jade make it at home and introduce it as a trendy coffee in Korea, where people make it to kill time and boredom. The recipe is easy and requires few ingredients as most of the latter are readily available at home.
Take two tablespoons of instant coffee mix, two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of hot water and whisk together until a foamy and frothy cream texture appears. To make things easier, use a whipping tool or appliance, and voila, the cream is ready. Pour the cream onto a cup of milk with a bit of ice and enjoy the coffee.
This coffee originated in India, Pakistan and Macao. Korean actor Jung Il-woo tried the creamy coffee when he visited Macao and introduced this as dalgona coffee for its color resemblance to the Korean candy dalgona or ppopgi (honeycomb toffee) being sold as street food in Korea.
In Malaysia, making and enjoying this coffee have become a family activity during this quarantine time. Just adjust the amount of sugar to sweeten as desired. Apart from the fun and joy of making the drink, relish the sense of accomplishment when the coffee is ready.
