World Marine Aids to Navigation Day, observed on July 1, was officially designated in 2018 by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) during the World Lighthouse Conference.

This occasion raises awareness of the crucial role lighthouses play in maritime safety and their significance as cultural landmarks and tourist attractions.

On the annual day's seventh anniversary, Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries from June 26 to July 6 hosted Korea Lighthouse Week to promote the role of lighthouses in maritime safety and their potential as tourism resources. It held art contests, mural painting experiences and photo exhibitions.

Korea's extensive coastline houses a high number of lighthouses, many of which are recognized worldwide for their innovative design and engineering excellence.

Among the many lighthouses in Korea, I specifically chose to highlight Palmido Lighthouse due to its profound historical significance. Launched in 1903, it was the nation’s first modern lighthouse and guided Allied Forces during the pivotal Incheon Landing Operation in September 1950 during the Korean War.

Homigot left a deep impression due to its architectural excellence and unique design. Notably, its 2022 award from the IACA highlights that Homigot is more than just a geographical landmark. These aspects inspired me to specifically mention Homigot.

Built in 1908 and earning the IALA honor of Heritage Lighthouse of the Year in 2022, Homigot Lighthouse is another example of the nation's maritime heritage. Known for its sturdy double-tube design and Greek-style gable roof, it has withstood both the test of time and harsh conditions of the sea and combines architectural integrity with rich symbolism.
