Korea and Kazakhstan have vowed to share information about the legislative process and to further cooperate in the law-making sector.

On December 26 last year, a delegation from the Korean Ministry of Government Legislation (MOLEG) held a meeting with Aslan Sultanovich Tukiyev, director of the Law Department at the Kazakh Ministry of Justice.

During the talks, the two sides discussed how to smooth the mutual sharing of each other’s law-making process and to enhance cooperation in the field.

This is the first time for Korea to hold an official meeting with the justice department of the Central Asian nation. The talks came to an end with many meaningful outcomes: Kazakhstan will offer to Korea a wide range of information about its constitutional, criminal and tax laws, while it is, in turn, authorized to ask for Korean legal information as it pleases.

In addition, the two nations talked about signing an MOU to facilitate legal exchanges and cooperation and agreed to do so in the near future after further discussion.

According to the MOLEG, encouraged by the outcome of this gathering, it will continue to work together with other Asian countries that have so far remained off the Korean radar when it comes to legal cooperation.

The next day, the Korean delegates visited the Kazakh Humanities and Law University where they met its founder and president, Narikbayev Maksut Sultanovich. They discussed ways to enhance legal cooperation between the two nations.

The MOLEG agreed to donate to the university its three-volume “60-Year History of Legislation of the Republic of Korea” in English that looks back on the past 60 years of Korean law.

In response, Sultanovich said, “This will be a very valuable resource for our researchers specializing in comparative law,” expressing his gratitude for the donation.
