President Park Geun-hye urged her administration to make all-out efforts to end the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) contagion.

President Park emphasized that full authority should be given to experts on the Joint Public-Private MERS Response Task Force so that they can make timely decisions according to the situation. She visited the task force, set up at Government Complex-Seoul, where she reviewed the current quarantine situation and the government's support for tackling the spread of the virus.

“The point of a quarantine is to be aware of the complete infection vector and perfectly cut all connected chains, thus preventing all possible contact,” said President Park.

“As we need to make swift decisions according to a changing situation, we need to form a special team of experts and give them full authority in order to make timely responses," she said.

In regard to the on-going, one-on-one system for those who are self-detained, a measure used to completely prevent any possible contact, President Park said, “The Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs should conduct site inspections in a thorough manner in cooperation with the ministry and the local government.”

“To cut the infection vector and to stop the spread of the virus to other communities, it is essential to cooperate between the central government and local government entities, and between the central quarantine authorities and quarantine bodies in local governments.”
